How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Your Room

Choosing the right size rug can be daunting. After all, a rug that’s too small will fail to anchor the room while one that’s too big will swallow up the furniture and leave the room feeling cramped.

The good news is that there are some simple rules to help you get it right.

Ø  Make the furniture the focal point

When choosing a rug size, it’s easy to get hung up on the size of the room.

For living rooms, the best approach is to make sure the rug you choose will frame the seating area.

A larger size rug that will enable you to place the front legs of the sofa and chairs on top of it will be better than something small that sits on the floor between them.

If you have a large room, you could consider getting a bigger size rug and place your entire seating arrangement on it.

Ø  Tips for choosing the right size rug for your living room

If you’re furnishing a living room there are three basic options when it comes to rugs.

·        Small size rugs – these are ideal if you want to leave your seating arrangement free standing, the rug should be placed so that the coffee table is on it but the seating is on the floor around it. Small rugs are great for small rooms.

·        Medium size – this is a good option if you want to put the front legs of your seating on the rug but leave the rest on the floor. Medium size rugs are the easiest option for most living rooms.

·        Large size – this is ideal if you want to place your entire seating arrangement on the rug, plus the coffee table. Big rooms lend themselves to big rugs!

Before you get any rugs measure the distance between your furniture to ensure that you leave enough space around the edges of the rug so that it doesn’t feel crowded and cramped.

m  Choosing the right size rug for a bedroom

For the bedroom, the aim should be to make sure that the rug frames the bed rather than being hidden beneath it.

A good option is to place a large size rug beneath the bed and allow it to spill over the edges on either side.

This will give you somewhere to stand when getting up in the morning and will ensure that your room feels warmer.

Smaller rooms can make use of smaller size rugs or runners placed alongside the bed.

m  You’ll need more space for a dining room

If you want to place a dining room rug beneath your table, make sure that you choose a size that will allow for easy movement around the chairs.

This will be more comfortable as well as practical.

A small rug can cause chair legs to dig into it making it uncomfortable and hard to use.

m Don’t forget the shape

When choosing the right size rug don’t forget the shape. Rectangular rugs are ideal for living rooms and bedrooms while circular rugs work best in circular dining rooms or small seating areas.

Freeform or irregular shaped rugs can be a good option if you want the rug to make a statement.

m Mark the area out before you buy the rug

The next time you’re choosing a new rug use masking tape or newspapers to mark out the area that you want on the floor.

Get down on your hands and knees and inspect the area to make sure that the furniture will all fit. When choosing the size of the rug you should also make sure that you can all see the room from different angles.

Will the door open? Can you all pull the chairs out? Does the room feel right?

Standing back to look over the room is a good way to make sure that the rug fits with the furniture.

A few minutes spent measuring is always better than getting the wrong size.

m  The perfect rug should feel right

As a rule of thumb, the perfect rug will feel like it always belonged in the room.
